Website vs Facebook page: what does your business need?

A Facebook page is free and easy. A website costs money. For many South African businesses the right answer is both, used differently.

"We have a Facebook page. Do we really need a website?"

It is a fair question. A Facebook page is free, takes ten minutes to set up and puts you where your customers already are. A website costs money and takes weeks. So why bother?

Because they do different jobs. Most South African businesses need both, used for what each does best.

What a Facebook page does well

  • Reach and conversation. People scroll, see your post, comment and share. It is where awareness happens.
  • Low effort updates. A photo of today's special or this week's completed job takes a minute.
  • Social proof. Reviews, likes and comments are visible and feel real.
  • Messaging. Messenger and WhatsApp links make it easy to start a chat.

What a Facebook page cannot do

  • Be found on Google for what you do. Someone searching "electrician Centurion" or "physiotherapist Umhlanga" will mostly see websites and Google Business Profiles, not Facebook pages.
  • Present your business properly. Your services, pricing, process, team and portfolio are buried under a timeline of posts. A new visitor cannot find the basics.
  • Convert reliably. There is no quotation form, no booking system, no structured enquiry. Everything becomes a loose message.
  • Belong to you. The platform decides who sees your posts, how your page looks and whether it stays up. Reach can drop overnight.
  • Look established. For many buyers, especially business buyers, "they only have a Facebook page" is a reason to hesitate.

What a website does well

  • Google visibility. A properly built site with location and service pages appears when people search for what you do.
  • Credibility. A professional site with clear services, real work and contact details signals a real, established business.
  • Structured enquiries. Quotation forms, booking requests and WhatsApp buttons that capture the right details first time.
  • Ownership. Your domain, your content, your rules. Nobody can switch it off.
  • A base for everything else. Online ordering, customer portals, booking systems and automation all attach to a website, not to a Facebook page.

So which do you need?

Just starting, testing an idea, tiny budget: start with a Facebook page and a WhatsApp Business number. Learn what customers ask for.

Operating, getting enquiries, wanting more of the right ones: you need a website. Keep the Facebook page for conversation and updates, and point it to the site for anything that matters.

Selling to other businesses, or in a field where trust matters (healthcare, legal, construction, finance): a website is not optional. Buyers check.

The simplest combination that works

  1. A focused business website that explains what you do, shows your work and makes enquiring effortless.
  2. A Google Business Profile linked to the website so you appear in local search and on Maps.
  3. A Facebook (and perhaps Instagram) page for updates and conversation, linking back to the website.
  4. WhatsApp Business connected to all three.

Each piece does its job. Together they get you found, trusted and contacted.
